hi, my son is 8 yo.  he has a few things concerning me, but may be nothing.  more recently we have noticed a bulging vein on leg on 2 cm wide.

Hard to say: 2cm is quite large for a venous appearing mass.  Did you measure it? I would have this area looked at by a physician.  We might be able to help with a Prime visit with photos.  If he is fair, and this is truly a vein not really 2 cm, it could be a normal superficial vein.  Since we don't have more history, hard to connect with your other concerns. Venous insufficiency: Venous insufficiency is the backwards flow of blood in the veins. This is the underlying cause of varicose veins. Varicose veins are dilated [bulging] veins that do not circulate blood properly. They can occur in either leg, right or left.

Refluxing veins.: Varicose veins are due to leaking valves(called reflux) most commonly in the saphenous system.  To treat these you must first undergo a venous reflux ultrasound to make the diagnosis and determine the proper treatment.  Medical management would be the use of support hose but this is only masking the problem.  Laser closure of the leaking valves and micro incisions to remove the vv's is the ideal.

Close leaking valves: Varicose veins are a result of malfunctioning valves usually in the saphenous system. The first step in treatment would be to obtain a venous reflux ultrasound to make the diagnosis and help plan treatment which could  be laser or radiofreqency closure of the valves usually with microphlebectomies and possible sclerotherapy or ultrasound directed sclerotherapy. You should see a vein specialist.

Maybe normal: Bulging veins are very common in pregnancy. Pressure from the uterus on the pelvic veins leads to bulging of veins in the thighs and legs. The hormones also affect the vessels size. If there is pain and swelling though then you should be seen by a physician. Good luck.

Fluid retention!: Fluid retention, and vigorous exercise will make large veins look larger!

Unlikely: The risk factors for development of prominent bulging veins are heredity, pregnancy, prolonged standing/sitting, age, obesity.  The subsequent swelling is a result of venous hypertension due to venous valvular incompetence. Yes: Skinny people have less subcutaneous fat which makes veins more visible. Men tend to have bigger more noticeable veins and physically active people have larger veins to handle the volume of blood required to oxygenate active peripheral muscle in the body. So active men have bigger veins generally than inactive men and most women and in skinny people veins are more apparent. You are normal.
