Cartilage removal: The knee has 2 cushioning cartilages called menisci . They are shaped like a waxing or waning moon. With injury the meniscus can become torn. Most tears of the meniscus do not heal and some require partial removal through arthroscopic surgery.

after a partial medial meniscectomy a month ago i still experience a clunking when i squat (getting up from a chair) +  have a lump. is this normal?

Post op knee: It can be normal , it depends if it has associated pain. Clunking getting up from a chair is, most likely related to patella femoral contact which usually resolves with strengthening of the thigh muscles

Postop pain: There's no such thing as small surgery. Even arthroscopic surgery doesn't solve things overnight. First and foremost you should be checked to make sure there's no infection.  Other reasons for persistent pain include arthritis and complex regional pain syndrome (formerly known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy). You should definitely see your surgeon.

Knee pain: this should not be the cause of your lateral knee pain and there is likely a new pain generator, which could be IT band syndrome, fat pad impingement, or patellofemoral pain if MRI did not show any significant finding in the lateral meniscus or articular cartilage.

i had arthroscopic medial meniscectomy (partial) 3 months ago.  arthritis stages 2 & 3 seen underside of patella & frayed areas trimmed. no other arthritis seen.  doing pt but still have pain, swelling, limp & walk with a cane. is this abnormal?

Arguable: Recent articles show knee exercises are as good or better than surgery for knee arthritis and meniscal tears treated with use and quad strengthening show almost the same results as surgery. If Aleve (naproxen) and good athletic shoes offer comfort, I'd avoid further surgery.  Take Chondroitin daily and hope for the best.

Varies: Surgeons vary on their opinion about this, so you would probably want to check with your individual surgeon.  The general idea is that the healing process of the bone plug on your graft includes an inflammatory stage for the first 4 weeks or so that could be potentially inhibited by taking an antiinflammatory.

Removal of cartilage: When people tear cartilage in the knee joint, it's usually a meniscus teat.  This semi-circular cartilage rings the periphery of the knee joint and helps cushion impact . The meniscus is avascular, except at the edges furthest away from the joint.  The meniscus often tears in this low blood supply area and in not repairable.  The torn part is excised arthroscopically, leaving the remainder intact.

Not much: Menisectomy these days is very simple surgery, have few complications if it is done the right hands. The possible complication is infection (less than 1%) we usually give antibiotic before it.
