zpack for strep, when will i feel better?

Less thana week: Antibiotics aren't very effective at shortening the course of strep throat.  They're given mainly to prevent some uncommon complications, such as rheumatic fever or kidney complications.  The symptoms almost always go away within a week whether you take antibiotics or not.

is azithromycin (7day zpack) ever prescribed for strep?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Zithromax (Zpak, azithromycin) is usually effective against strep throat germs, so surely a doctor somewhere has prescribed a 7-day course for treating strep throat. The usual course of Zithromax for strep throat is 5 days, but taking another 2 days should not cause any problems.

i am on zpack right now for strep is it safe for me to have one or two drinks of alcohol while being on this medication?

: Yes, it's safe. Somehow many people have come to believe that alcohol doesn't mix with antibiotics or interfere's with antibiotic effectiveness. It's an urban myth. Don't get tanked, but a a few drinks is fine.

i started an antibiotic yesterday for strep, he switched me to a zpack today, ive i my had 3 of the other antibiotic. should i start my zpack tonight?

: You did not tell us what the reason antibiotic was changed, but yes, you can start the Z-pack today.

is it possible to get a positive strep rapid test result but actually have f. necrophorum instead? i am on day 2 of z-pak but just learned about lemieres syndrome and i am concerned. i travel in 3 weeks?

: In science/medicine we are taught to never say never. The likelihood of this happening is something on the order of winning the lottery. If you are concerned about any such issue clear travel with the doc who knows your case.

if someone has strep several times and they now have a case where amox, penicillin, zpack and clindamycin aren't working should they just let their body fight it off naturally at that point?

: If proper culture and sensitivity test are performed the appropriate antibiotic should be able to be chosen

: There are no known interactions between metronidazole gel and azithromycin. You should follow the treatment recommendations made by the prescribing physician(s), always ensuring that you tell your physician all medications you are taking.

Yes: Zithromax can treat strep, however there is some resistance and the antibiotic might not work if you are infected with a resistant strain.

Pharyngitis: Persistent throat infection needs to be reevaluated by your doctor.  The 3 days of zpak was less than the optimal duration of 5 days, and if the throat infection is due to a bacteria that is resistant to zithromycin then 2 days of Amoxicillin is too soon to determine failure of the antibiotic.  Was a throat culture obtained?
