Yes--hoarseness: Your larynx--voice box and vocal cords are made of many small muscles and excesive/loud screaming at a ballgame can cause trauma/inflammation leading to hoarseness etc..Som have fun, but take it easy. Hoarseness from such cause usually resolves in few days with voice rest/fluids etc...If it persists, consult your doc. Good luck.

: Opening your mouth for checking your throat should not cause those symptoms. Just thinking about how long you have to open your mouth during a dental procedure but your throat is still not affected. You likely have a sore throat which can cause those symptoms. Take 2 tablets of acetaminophen or ibuprofen as a trial, those symptoms should be subsided in 1-2 hours. Take care.

: HPV auto-inoculation (self transfer of infection to a new body area) is believed to be uncommon, but may explain some oral infections. This is an entirely separate issue from performing oral on your wife, but her vaccination makes it very unlikely. HPV never causes the symptoms you describe. Oral HPV usually is harmless, rarely warts, cancer, or other health problems. You should not be worried.

Ice acutely: I would suggest ice on the affected area to
decrease the pain and spasm from the acute
injury - about 15 minutes every hour or so
after the first few days, moist heat can be
helpful to help calm down the muscle spasm
and decrease the pain
the therapists are best at mixing the use of
ice and heat.

Tension signs: With meningitis one also sees a positive kernig sign. The patient is on their back and the leg is lifted up and straightened. This stretches the dura. If it is inflammed from meningitis lifting the the leg will cause neck pain while in a neck strain it should not. If there is fever, chills, light sensitivity oyou would also suspect meningitis. If present take this person to the er.

Motion testing: When your neck hurts, one way to assess the cause is to slowly move your neck in flexion, extension, side to side and then lowering each ear to your shoulder. With significant muscle involvement, you will feel the particualr area of the muscle resist your motion. If you, instead hear a gentle popping, that may signal a joint issue.

PT and NSAIDs: Physical therapy in association with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (like ibuprofen) are a good way to alleviated the pain and stiffness of a neck muscle strain.  Osteopathic manipulation is also an option.  Make sure the treatment is coordinated by your physician - you don't want to take any medicine that may interact with other treatments you are receiving.

A few possibilities: Could be strained muscle or injury, nerve inj., infection, spasm, or vertebral or rib dysfunction.Neck muscles attach to ribs, too, so if a rib is out of whack or refuses to move, the muscle gets tight and painful.A good history &amp; physical exam including an osteopathic hands-on exam might find the cause.Manipulation may help.Other treatments may be necessary-but first you need a proper diagnosis.
