Diagnosis: Tinnitus or "ringing in the ear" in most cases can not be cured.  However, there are a number of causes that can be controlled.  Noise exposure is probably the most common cause.  But various types of middle ear and inner ear diseases, if controlled, may relieve the tinnitus.  Incidentally, the most likely accepted origin of the sound is arising from the temporal lobe of the brain.

Have a cold or URI?: Any type of inflammation such as a cold or allergies will cause this problem . It is usually in the middle ear. Takes time. Are you a smoker or have sleep apnea ?
This can add to the problem. See an ent for further dx and treatment.

You injured it,and: now it's tender.It will take more time to heal.Notice if you have bruising or swelling in front of ,or behind,the ear.If so,this may need to be drained.When it's not,you may develop cauliflower ear.

Ear swelling: Was the ear injured? Is there bleeding under the skin? Did you have it pierced? Is there redness/pus/pain? Try cool compresses/ice temporarily. If bleeding or inflammation, see fp/ent to treat injury/infection.
