i got dark blacky brown stool with mucus. what are the reasons?

Black stools: Usually this means bleeding from the stomach. (Ulcer).
Family med or internist can be very helpful, ASAP.
Alternatively you can drink 2 ounces of Aloe vera juice for a few weeks and see if this gets better, but its always safe to seek medical care first.

i have noticed a change in my stool - some cramping, smaller stool, beige-brown colored mucus. no blood. i recently changed my multivitamin to centrum

Accepted Answer

Not the vitamins: I doubt this is the vitamin. That might be blood in the stool as the color can vary depending on where it is bleeding. Either way sounds like a trip to your doctor is in order.

brown stringy stool with mucus. no pain and no changes in diet or anything. day 2 that i've noticed it.
what could it be? i'm very scared

Bowel irregularity: Sometimes the bowels get upset. Need more information, Age, part of world, other meds, diseases.
Usually bowel consistency changes with diet. Have you eaten differently ?  Any seafood? Shellfish? Water contamination, out of country?
Need more information.
Probiotics by mouth at the pharmacy are useful for getting the gut back on tract after a normal doctor exam.

i had on/off mucus in stool from last three months due to anal fissure. sometimes i see white, yellow, and even dark brown mucus. stool tests show only mucus nothing else. sometimes rectal cramps and burning.
should i go for colonoscopy or not?

: Yes, if offered. The colonoscopy will offer a better understanding of possible conditions affecting the colon, specifically inflammatory bowel disease and would be part of the workup.

Oral thrush: Oral thrush in an immunocompetent patient is concerning. Oral thrush may occur in patients who are using inhaled steroids for asthma. If that is not the case get a HIV test done.

: Small amounts of mucus in the stool is not unusual as it is a lubricant secreted by the large intestinal cells to keep things moving. However if it increases in volume or have blood and other substance also present, it might be a sign that requires attention first of the PCP and then the Gastroenterologist. Please check it out if it persists.

It may be normal: A little mucus is nothing to worry about if there are no other symptoms.But you should check with your doctor if there is excessive and persistant mucus in stool, or it is accompanied by blood in the stools and if associated with change in bowels.As that may be due to underlying conditions like intestinal infection, inflammatory bowel disease.

Most likely not: This sounds like mucorrhea.  This is not serious in of itself but is there any blood? The fact that you have this every time might be related to what you eat or could relate to irritable bowel.  I would suggest that you discuss with your doctor so that it can be further defined and make sure you have nothing serious.

is it normal for stools to look darker before they hit the water? i swear, mine look almost black at first. (but i also notice lots of reddish brown mucus around submerged stool so maybe that's why?)

Might not be...: Stool color can vary a lot by diet. But, dark stools are typical when there is blood incorporated in the stool. Especially blood from higher up in the GI tract, e.g., your stomach. I think you should have this checked out. Tested to see if it is blood. If you are bleeding somewhere in your GI tract, it needs to be diagnosed and treated asap.

yesterday i saw dark brownish/reddish colored mucus in my stool. i gave stool c/e test and the report says everything is ok. 
how can this be possible i saw that thing by myself and i'm not sure whether it was blood or mucus. report maybe wrong?

Accepted Answer

: Stool can be red colored from food such as grapes, beets, cranberries, tomato juice or red/-grape colored drinks. Alternatively, if the test was expired it may not have been working properly.  Would repeat the exam especially if you are having continuing issues and would follow up with  MD.  Mucus is not the standard in stool
