Might not be...: Stool color can vary a lot by diet. But, dark stools are typical when there is blood incorporated in the stool. Especially blood from higher up in the GI tract, e.g., your stomach. I think you should have this checked out. Tested to see if it is blood. If you are bleeding somewhere in your GI tract, it needs to be diagnosed and treated asap.

R/O GI bleeding: Black stools may result from eating black licorice, lead exposure, iron pills, bismuth (pepto-bismol), blueberries. Otherwise, work up for gastro-intestinal bleeding ; treatment of the cause is indicated.
