Heart : Heart catheterization is the insertion of a catheter in to the vessels of the heart. It is performed to visualize the the vessels, diagnose blockages (artherosclerosis) and implement intervention (baloon angioplasty or stents) if needed.
Traditionally, physicians will access the vessels of the heart throught the groin via the femoral artery. Once the vessels of the heart are reached, the vessels can be visualized by injecting contrast, which allows the vessels to be visualized under xray fluoroscopy.
The indications for heart catheterization include investigation of chest pain and shortness of breath (or other symptoms of cardiac insufficiency), to confirm the presence of an ailment, and to determine the extent of cardiac disease.
