Pain in the neck: or cervicalgia, is the most common syndrome seen in PCP practice. May be due to a muscle strain or ligament sprain and with associated symptoms headache, facial pain or TMJ. See your PCP for consultation, tests and treatment.

Viral infection: and musculo-skletal pain. An upper respiratory tract infection or a cold can inflame your cervical lymphonode. It gradually goes down after your cold or URI is over. The neck and shoulder pain could be due to sleeping on your left side.  Take advil (ibuprofen) for the pain. It can take up to 10 days to get over the pain.

Lavator syndrome: If the pain is between the spine and your shoulder blade, i would consider levator syndrome (muscle irritation) likely due to posture especially computer work. Rest, ice, nsaid's, and salonpas hot patches (capsacian patches) are good. Change your posture, monitor at eye level. Consider mckenzie pt (robin mckenzie, treat your own neck, available online $8.32).
