: steroid does not provide instant relief...it usually takes a day or so to START working. Some doc mixes a bit of lidocaine (AKA novacaine) which can provide brief but more or less instant relief. In some cases, steroid injection may not work at all---a different steroid may work etc...I hope you are getting some relief. Consult doc. good luck

No: Generally exercises will not improve a trigger finger.

Call your surgeon: You should talk to and probably see the surgeon if you are still having issues.

Possibly: It is possible that the medication used for your injection has affected your sensory nerve.  However, the numbness should resolve within a few hours - if not, i would recommend that you follow up with your physician.

Upto 48 hrs.: In majority of patients, it takes upto 48 hrs for relief after a cortisone shot. In some  patients ( about 5-8%), the pain can get worse for about 24-36 hrs, before it gets better. 
The shot should be given around the tendon and not into it.

Every 3-4 months: Usually steroid injections are given only every 3-4 months.

No: If you mean put in an injection of cortisone on your own in your own finger i would say no not a good idea   not quite as bad an idea as taking out your own appendix but close 
also cortisone will somewhat elevate your glucose level    imho injections are less effective than surgery and do carry some risk of tendon damage.

Trigger finger: Can improve on its own, or with anti inflamm stories or an injection of cortisone and finally surgical release is usually very straightforward.

Physical examination: Trigger finger is caused when the space between the flexor tendon and the tendon sheath (tunnel) becomes tight.  It becomes difficult to bend the finger and it may become stuck, either in flexion (bent) or extension (straight).  This can be seen on physical exam.  Typically the hand is tender over the horizontal crease in the hand.  This is more common in diabetics.
