Statins: A high cholesterol level should be cared for with statins. If you do not have diabetes you need to carefully control your cholesterol to a point that the level is normal. If you don't you might develop diabetes. You don't want that!

Low risk: Statins do raise the risk of diabetes slightly, however you should not discontinue the medication without consulting your doctor, You may discuss using a different statin. See this site for info.

Triglycerides: I don't rely on statins to lower serum triglycerides but, in addition to dietary measures, omega 3 fish oil,taking fibric acid deriverative medications like fenofibrate and taking high dose niacin are effective. You have to take very high doses of statins in order to effectively lower serum triglycerides. Fibrates can cause myopathy and one has to be very cautious using them together with statins.

51f. i started taking a statin (10mg lipitor) a month ago and it's increased my blood sugar significantly. my a1c has been in the prediabetes range so i occasionally check it. is it possible that a different statin would not have this effect?

: I have been taking LIVALO 2mg for 10 years, without any problems. Ask your doctor for best information.

i exercise 5x/week; high fiber, low sugar diet; normal weight; low bp. i'm 40 and mostly healthy. but, my ldl-c is high (150-160 since 2012). the rest of my lipid panel looks fine. would statins make sense? or should i get my ldl-p checked first?

: LDL-C is actually a calculated number, rather than a count, whereas LDL-P is an actual count of LDL particles.  Increased risk is associated more with LDL-P, so that would be the number to know.  Also helpful would be to know the ratio of the size of different particles, whether small or large.  Small particles are associated with more risk for cardiovascular disease than large particles.

statins: Sometimes creatine phosphokinase levels are elevated in people taking statins. Some people having statin related muscle pains get relief from creatine supplements. What all this means is still under study.

Combination: It may be a combination of factors. Discuss with your pcp. He may suggest some other tests, including an ultrasound of your liver.

Statin therapy: Other than a lipid panel there is no specific blood test required before starting a statin.  Talk with a prescribing physician,a thorough physical history and examination and judicious blood tests would be appropriate

: If you do indeed have true rhabdomyolysis, your CK will always be quite elevated as will be urinary myoglobin.  But statin myopathies may be associated with mild weakness and minimal changes in muscle enzymes, early on.
