May be none: If you can bend your knee without pain, the likelihood is that the joint was not affected. It would help to lose weight, not easy.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex. 
Get HPV vaccine.

Not enough info: It would be unusual for a systemic Staph infection just from casual contact.   I would consider other options, include reactive arthritis, crystalline arthritis (gout/pseudogout).  It doesn't seem like the information given is going to help us pinpoint why you have this.  Any recent new sexual partner or risk for gonorrhea? Where was trip?  Lumbago with sciatica can lead to pain in those areas.

Unsure?: By your quesiton, I am unsure.  However, if you believe you have an infections in your knee, anywhere, please see a doctor immediately and have it examined and appropriately treated.  Knee infections are very serious and the sooner it is treated, the better.  Don't delay.  Get seen!

Suspicion/tests: The results of an exam & tests (cbc, crp, sed rate) often lead to suspicion about infection in a joint. A needle aspiration & lab examination of joint fluid is often the best way to be sure.

Skin infections: You should have your leg evaluated by your doc, of which you may need an antibiotic. Till you get to see your doc, keep the area clean with soap &amp; water, dry it &amp; if the skin is open, use topical Neosporin, which could cut down the amount of infection. Take Aleve (naproxen) or Motrin to help with the pain and inflammation. Do not wait to see your doc, these are only temporizing measures.

No/yes: No it is not normal &amp; yes it can be infected. The description does not make this clear, but it is worth your having it evaluated before it gets worse.
