i am one week post c-section. is it ok to go up and down stairs? we don't have a bathroom on the the first floor and i don't want to be stuck upstairs

Yes: It is generally not harmful to walk up and down the stairs after surgery like a c-section. It may be painful, so try to limit the number of trips. You may find it less uncomfortable to walk down the stairs backwards as it may be less of a strain on your incision. Always have help close by when taking the stairs.

Ask the surgeon: Most likely it is safe 4 week post op, but everyone heals differently and depending on your specific post op course, the best advice is going to come from the surgeon who knows your case and did your surgery.  A quick call to their office will go a long way to getting the best answer, best wishes and congratulations!

Baby!: You and your doctor will determine what delivery method is best based on your pregnancy. If a c-section is needed, you will go to the operating room. You will likely get a spinal which will make you numb. And then an incision is made above your pubic bone, and the baby is delivered through that incision. After the baby comes out, your doctor will sew you back together.

Congratulations!: Congratulations on at least your sixth child. Your OB surgeon will have his/her work "cut out" for them due to possible adhesions at the time of the Cesarean. I hope you have completed your family with this pregnancy.

Many reasons: There are many reasons why women have c-sections. Some of them include failure to dilate/progress in labor, the baby's inability to tolerate labor, non-cephalic presentation, placenta previa, HIV or active herpes, or a previous myomectomy. Discuss your concerns with your doctor.

No: Just because you are petite, it does not guarantee a c-section. Alot of factors determine whether or not a person has to have a c-section, including fetal position and size, prior c-sections and fetal distress. Small stature alone does not equal c-section.

Bleeding, infection: Complications from a cesarean delivery are rare. The possible complications are bleeding, infection and injury to other structures.

Other than a sore abdomen, where the incision is made, and some restrictions as to activities for about 4-6 weeks, the recovery from a "C-section" is often less painful than a difficult delivery.  Having a C-section does not necessarily commit you to another with your next pregnancy.
