i occasionally get a sharp stabbing pain in my armpits, what could cause this?

Doctor can evaluate: Brief, sharp pains that occur in the armpits can be mysterious. If they are in the ribcage, they may be sensations of irritation of the pleura (the lining of the inside of the chest cage). If they are truly in the armpit, then a doctor can examine the muscles, tendons, bones, skin glands, hair follicles, lymph nodes, blood vessels, etc..., in that area to see if there is an abnormality.

D dimer not specific: The d dimer test is not specific meaning that various conditions other than a clot can make it high. A persons age, recent trauma or current meds can affect the level. I would consider the possibility of a pulmonary embolism if you told me you were short of breath along with chest pain. You did mention pain in your arm pit and breast. See a doctor if this is a concern.

Recommend seeing: A physician. This could be a number of things. This can include nerve irritation from the neck causing the pain and numbness. Another cause could be a brachial plexus related neuropathy. This could be from injury or a mass exerting pressure on the brachial plexus. Do you have any masses in the armpit of upper out quadrant of the breast? Safest recommendation is a physical exam by doctor.

Yes and no: if its your left armpit, you're over 60, and you have known heart problems, maybe.  If not, its probably a myofascial (that means muscle and connective tissue) strain and will respond to gentle stretching and NSAIDS.  To be sure, see your primary care practitioner.

If it resolves, fine: If the pain persists more than a few more hours, go to the ER especially if it involves chest heaviness, or any shortness of breath.

The pain: "sounds" like an irritated NERVE in your lower NECK (that is RADIATED PAIN from a disc bulge at C6-C7 cervical vetebral level! See your PCP ( who should also examine under your arm to eliminate a tender lymph node(s)

May be muscle spasm: Stabbing pain on one side of the chest can often be due to spasm of the large muscle in that area.  This would seem even more of a possibility if the sensation was more forward in the chest--in line with the front part of the armpit.  In fact the muscle that may be involved, which is called pectoralis major, is part of the front of the armpit itself and extends across the chest towards the middle.
