Chestpain: At your age it is probably not heart related. It could be muscle related pain. If the pain is recurrent and not going away, it's worth having it examined to rule out underlying lung or pericardial problems.

i don't have chest pain in my left side really. i've had more pain in my right side than on the left. it's just a discomfort that goes from the left side of the chest to my armpit and it feels like something is in there.

Your description is: not typical for cardiac issues and your young age would argue against this as well however there are quite a few potential diagnoses both life threatening and or benign that could explain your symptoms. It would be a very good idea to go to a health care provider and get checked out.

Chest Pain: Several things.  It could be a pulled muscle or pinched nerve, but any pain near the left side of the chest in a mail your age should be checked out.  I would recommend going to an ER or Urgent Care, especially if are having an episode.

Why take a chance?: Young adult people can have unusual congenital or genetic risks for heart attacks. Severe acute chest pain into left arm in a any adult is concerning enough to go to Urgent Care or ER ASAP.  An EKG and a blood test seem like a small price to pay.

See thoracic surgeon: Begin with pcp , if no help concider vascular or thoracic surgeon. Your first rib could pressing on the vessel causing symptoms. Thoracic outlet syndrome is remote possibility.

Don't smoke: Chew two aspirins when it happens, control your blood pressure, cholesterol, eat healthy and exercise. Then, no matter the cause, you will have done your share. I would also drink a glass of cold milk and try antacid when it happens. Maybe your stomach acting up. Have you visited a dentist for tmj? How is your neck and mid-back? Any family history of heart problems? Anxiety?

Follows a rib: That's a pretty good description! it's following an intercostal muscle or rib. You may have costochonditis (rheumatism of the joint where the rib attaches to the breatbone). You may have intercostal neuritis. If a rash appears, it could even be shingles. Has there been any minor trauma or lifting?
