Contact sports: High myopia, in general, predisposes you to retinal tears &amp; retinal detachment. Sports that have a high level of physical contact, such as boxing, football, basketball, weight lifting, &amp; very strenuous exertional activities may increase your risk. Moderate, non-contact  activities are probably fine. But do be weary of sudden flashes &amp; floaters and seek ophthalmological care if symptoms occur.

Ask an Optician : A good optician should be able to recommend some good sports glasses for you.

Accepted Answer

: Do not see any rationale to avoid playing soccer, based upon your myopia.  Yes, you could have contact and get injured, but that would be true for any player.  Just make sure you address any future injuries in a timely fashion.

Possible Stickler's: Marfanoid or Marfan requires a Marfanoid habitus-span greater than above average height, dolichostenomelia (muscularly thin, not at all fat), arachnodactyly (unusually long and narrow hands and feet), small chin, high arched and narrow palate, crowded teeth, malar hypoplasia, scoliosis, winged scapulae, abnormally wide insertion of aorta.  Stickler: Pierre-Robin--midline cleft of soft palate

Not all have it: This is a condition in which in the presence of higher degrees of myopia (not very common) there are changes at the back of the eye near the areas that see fine detail in which the retina may stretch, develop pigment changes and sometimes bleed.  It is very, very uncommon and most myopes, even extreme don't have this.  Any ophthalmologist can find this if present and the best steps can be taken.

Not logical: The higher the myopia, the greater the need for glasses and the greater the need for more power.  So high myopia is "worse".  However most myopia, even high myopia, can be corrected with contacts or glasses.  Check with you ophthalmologist for the best options.

Correction/surgery: High myopia can be addressed with glasses, contact lenses, laser vision correction or lens based surgery.  Your ophthalmologist can help you decide what the best and safest option is.  Retinal detachment can only be treated surgical by a retina specialist.

Myopia: Most likely were born with the genetics that resulted in myopia. If do the you are at a slight increase risk for retinal detachment. Maybe 1/5000 instead of 1/8000. So all eyes are at risk, with myopia the retina is slightly thinner resulting in a slightly higher risk for a tear that could result in a detachment. Any sudden bright flashes, burst of floaters, or a curtain or veil over your vision.

Depends: It is difficult to predict whether the eyes would get worse over time.  It is better that you wear glasses. Wearing glasses does not make make your eyes get worse

are intraocular lens really effective for high myopia rate patients (-15)? are there different types of these intraocular lenses for myopia? risky?

Accepted Answer

Yes: The power or "size" of the intraocular lens (iol) is determined similar to measuring shoe size-- by measuring the the length of the eyeball and the curvature of the cornea in the front of the eye.  Even if you are very myopic, we can determine the appropriate power of an iol for your eye to give you clear distance vision.  The established iols are very safe, but we are less sure about new ones.
