Sorry.Please restate: I don't understand "painless" what?  All muscles should  NORMALLY be painless.  Are you saying you've had weight loss only &amp; are concerned this is a symptom for MND? Or that you have painless loss of muscle mass WITHOUT weakness &amp; weight loss? Noticeable weakness may not occur right away depending on the individual. Loss of muscle mass with unintentional weight loss should be seen by a doctor now.

Electro-chemical: Neurotransmitters exist at the termination of the axon as it contacts other nerves or muscles.  There are excitatory neurotransmitters, and inhibitory.  The former glutamine and glycine, the latter norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin.  All exists in a balance, and is fine tuned in normal daily activity.

Loss of dopamine: producing cells can occur for many reason including programmed cell death, manganese poisoning, stroke, encephalitis MPTP exposure etc, If one could nail down the exact underlying mechanism of Apoptosis (programmed cell death) this might lead to disease modifying treatments for conditions like Parkinson's Disease. ,

Brief anatomy: The nerve is comprised of a central axon, and larger fibers have an insulation covering called myelin.  In the peripheral nervous system, the Schwann cell produces and maintains the insulation.  Integrity of the nerve cell within the spinal cord provides the nutrition to maintain axonal function.

Far too broad: What you have implied is some form of immune or autoimmune neuronopathy; however, the differential diagnosis of this is very broad.  See neurologist.  Look for hard data regarding what parts of the nervous system are being affected and what blood studies show about state of inflammatory mechanisms.  What evidence are you using for "dramatically damaged"?

Neuropsych testing: CT or MRI can show loss of brain volume, which usually means loss of brain cells, but this isn't very helpful. PET-CT can show how much metabolism is going on in areas of the brain. But neuropsychological testing is probably the most helpful, as it tests how well the brain is actually working to solve various tasks. Brain dysfunction may be caused by loss of neurons or impaired neural networks.

Division: We have a finite number of neurons as an adult- they don't divide. Possibly that's why only dividing cells become tumors- glial cells. As divisions occur mutations occur and a cancer forms.

Both: Primary brain tumors can arise from neuroglia including astrocytes (astrocytomas), oligodendrocytes (oligodendrogliomas), and ependymal cells (ependymomas). Other tumors can arise from the meninges, Schwann cells, germ cells, the pituitary gland, or the pineal gland. Recent research has shown that gliomas can be induced from neurons in mice (ref: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/338/6110/1080)

Yes: Ebv infections can certainly cause changes in your immune system that may result in autoimmune disease.
