Loss of dopamine: producing cells can occur for many reason including programmed cell death, manganese poisoning, stroke, encephalitis MPTP exposure etc, If one could nail down the exact underlying mechanism of Apoptosis (programmed cell death) this might lead to disease modifying treatments for conditions like Parkinson's Disease. ,
