This is usually self limiting disease which causes inflammation of the voice box and treated by cool steam and in severe cases by corticosteroid injection. Differential diagnosis is more important, cause it might be mistaken with epiglotitis which is life threatening and caused by bacteria.

Barking cough is the hallmark of croup and when the vocal cords become swollen and the lumen of the larynx gets narrow, a stridor (high pitch sound) occurs, it represents an emergency that needs to be dealt with. O/w, viral croup is a self limiting illness.
