Trauma that lead to: pain. Must be considered. Thumb ligament injury at the MCP joint, wrist fracture, in the radius or scaphoid are possible, as are other bone or ligament injury. tendon pain giving pain with thumb extension near the wrist can be a sign of contusion or tendonitis. An evaluation that includes xrays is typically a good step to take for the symptoms and history described here

had my blood taken for covid 19 antibody test 5 days ago. immediately when needle was put in i felt a sharp electric type pain shoot down my whole arm into my wrist and thumb. now i cant extend my arm without unbearable pain in. what should i do?

Urgent care: One possible causes is that there was a nerve that is inflamed. Any injuries in the past or in the past few weeks should be discussed with a physician. An imaging study may help to rule out a fracture, but from your description nerve inflammation should be considered. If you are recovering from COVID 19, please notify the center prior to entering. Stay home, rest and take ibuprofen for pain.

: Why do you need acupuncture to the thumb in the first place? Your thumb problem can be associated with the current symptoms rather than an injury from an acupuncture needle which is very rare.

Possibly surgery: Conservative treatment for carpal tunnel including splints, anti inflammatory meds and steroids work in the early stages but do not provide great long term relief as the condition worsens. Surgery can provide great relief and if done endoscopically can allow a rather quick return to function with minimal pain compared to traditional techniques. I would recommend an evaluation by a hand surgeon.

i had a brain mri with contrast for headache  needle in left hand. since the am after, i have had severe wrist pain (one week now). is this related?

Hard to say: But if it is the same wrist and nothing happened (like an injury) after the IV it is possibly related. Is there any swelling, discoloration, heat in the wrist?  Better check in with the person who ordered the mri.  Meanwhile, try heat packs and an analgesic.

Tendonitis is also common aroun the thumb and wrist. See a board certified orthopaedic hand surgeon for evaluation and treatment.
