Skiers thumb: Is a common name for a common injury to the mcp joint an ulnar or radial collateral ligament. While splinting may be used for some of these others with a complete rupture can need surgery and often do better if that surgery is offered earlier. Acute injuries do better if treated. Low grade sprains can be immobilized while complete ruptures can in some cases require surgery

Gamekeepers thumb: There are a number of names given to this injury which is most commonly an injury to ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb MCP joint. It can also some times affect radial collateral ligament. Degree of ligament tear determines the treatment. Partial tears usually respond to 4-6 weeks of continuous splinting. Complete tears with avulsion fracture, Stenner lesion or instability may require surgery.
