i am having issues dealing with the wrong gender identification. one of the radiologists determined my baby was a boy at 16weeks, 6days. another radiologist determined it was a girl at 22weeks. who should i believe? i have images from both sonograms.

Dilemma: Understandably, you would like to know the gender of your child. However, you must also understand that sonogram images are evaluated by radiologists who will interpret the images as they see them. Obviously, one of them is correct. On a personal note, does it really matter? Be thankful for a healthy child with no issues,  be a great mom, and enjoy the journey!

Of course: We all have stories of sonograms that were not correct.  Most of the time the sonographer is able to determine the sex of the baby, but be prepared.  Congratulations!

Easier to spot...: During ultrasound scanning, it is easier to spot a male fetus from a female fetus; hence the perception. It is also dependent on the experience of the technologist, the quality of the ultrasound machine, and the patients' body habitus.

i heard on an ultrasound if your placenta is on the left you are having a girl and if it's attached on the right then a boy. is there truth to this?

Myth: Around 16-20 wks you can sometimes identify the genitals. The placenta thing is a myth.

Can be difficult: I would not pick out gender specific clothes or decorations for the nursery.  Sometimes it is very easy to see the "important bits", and other times, usually related to the position of the fetus, it can be very hard.

Nothing: The measurement is significant depending on what is being measured.  Otherwise it is not useful.

Hard to tell: The ultrasound is relatively reliable after 18-20 weeks when read by an experienced radiologist. In simple terms  "the turtle must stick his head out" to see boy parts, and if they took enough time to evaluate the area it would be evident. I never bet the farm on an ultrasound. Although they are pretty good today I have seen them be wrong .

i had an anatomy ultrasound at 17w and 5days and they said it's a girl. what is the % of it being wrong?  should i have one more us to confirm? help

Accuracy: Of sex determination depends on when the study was performed and the ability of the sonographer. So, it is a wide range. Best to recheck later if this remains a concern.

Fertility: Not sure exactly what the Ultrasound would have showed.  But if you have issues with possible fertility, you both need to be evaluated by a fertility specialist.  If your wife has no egg production, that would be something that the fertility specialist may be able to help you both with in the long run.  Good luck.

can a young girl lose her virginity from a vaginal ultrasound?

No: Vaginal ultrasound is in no way related to someones virginity.  Many young women are very uncomfortable with having a vaginal exam of any kind.  If a pelvic exam cannot be avoided then the exam should be explained, her questions answered and every effort made to make the experience as comfortable as possible.  Hope this helps.
