Additionally, you may have a deviated septum, the structure that divides your nostrils in the center of your nose internally. Mucus can indicate nasal irritation or allergy. I recommend you see an ENT to evaluate.

Nasal pain: Nasal pain. The nose consists of your nasal passage. Which is the skin then the mucosa. The musosa lines the nasal septum and further up is your nasal tubinates. Pain can happen secondary to infection. Common infections include fungal infections and impetigo. The nares of the nose often get irritated. Trauma to nasal septum from blunt force, "picking" or use of cocaine. Pain from turbinates.

Vestibulitis: Just inside the opening of the nose is some quite delicate tissue.  Within this delicate skin or lining tissue, there are normal hair cells.  Because of the way these hair cells sit at the opening of the nose, they are frequently irritated or dried out and can have low grade infection, called vestibulitis.  This is treated with topical nasal ointment called bactroban.

Neti pot: Not sure you can avoid getting lint in your nose. The nose helps filter out the air you breathe in, so if you get stuff in there, you can gently blow into a tissue. If you feel the need, you can get a neti pot from the drugstore to rinse out your sinuses. Make sure you use sterile water and premixed packages of salts.

Hydration: Increasing the hydration of your nose may be helpful.  Try using saline nasal spray or nasal gel to help soothe your nasal lining.  Definitely avoid traumatizing it in any way and be very gentle if you have to blow your nose  if  you don't improve, you should see an ENT doctor.
