out fo nowhere i developed a small cluster of black dots on both thumbs. they are located at the fingertips, flat and do not itch or hurt. the size is about 2 mm. it started on one thumb and 5 days later on the other thumb. contagious? what is this?

Accepted Answer

: If it looks like blood under the skin it may just be what is called petechiae and it is due to trauma when you put pressure on the thumb. Are you on blood thinners or probably you should evaluate it further especially if you have other symptoms.

Doctor can evaluate: Rashes and spots are hard to describe and visualize in words. A primary care doctor or a urologist can check glans (penis head) spots to see what they might be. Possibilities include a flat mole, an infection (such as hpv wart virus), color changes after an abrasion, etc...

It : It would be helpful to know if they are itchy or painful? How long have they been present? You could be dealing with a dermatitis from certain lotions or detergents, and even eczema can present this way. There are also fungal infections that can cause patches/spots similar to what you described. The treatment for a fungus versus a dermatitis or eczema is different, therefore i would recommend a visit with your primary care provider in order to get a diagnosis so appropriate treatment can be started.

Probable infection: Sounds like it is an infection, either bacterial or possibly hsv. see dermatologist for eval and tx

Yes: Small hemorrhages under the thick skin on one's foot can present this way and "flake off" with time.

Black dot can also be  a melanoma so i would see a doctor if it does not flake away completely.

Shingles? Herpes?: If it appeared and developed the pimple-like bumps over just a few days, it could be herpes zoster (shingles). Less likely is herpes simplex virus (HSV). It's an unusual location for HSV, unless perhaps exposed to infected persons in contact sports:  "herpes gladiatorum" occurs in wrestlers, rugby players, etc. You should see a doctor right away, both for accurate diagnosis and maybe antiviral Rx.

Likely not.: It is unlikely that any significant change occurred in your skin lesion within one month since the last examination by a dermatologist; nevertheless, anything is possible. It is always wise to have all pigmented lesions evaluated regularly by a dermatologist; if there are changes, a visit or phone call also gives you the opportunity to discuss your concerns with the dermatologist who knows you.

Anal lesion: Please let your parents know about your concerns. We don't know what is causing that black dot, so it would be hard to recommend how to treat it. An  evaluation would help to determine the cause and a treatment plan can be developed at that poing.
