Relaxation: While medication can help, try dropping thoughts about inability to sleep and practice slowly relaxing your body from your toes to your head. Daily 10 minute meditation practice can also help.

Need to discover why: You have not posed a question but rather put a question mark after a statement. Here's my comment to that statement thou. You'd be better advised to seek a physician who is interested in figuring out the cause of your insomnia and addressing that as opposed tojust trying to knock you out with medication. You'll neither be cured nor grateful to the doctor willing to accommodate. Good luck

i can't sleep, what should i do to fix my insomnia?

Use great sleep : Hygiene.  Retire ; rise same time each day. Keep bedroom dark ; cool ; use only for sex ; sleep. Turn off tv. No naps. Exercise regularly but not in late evening. No caffeine for 6 hrs ; no alcohol or tobacco w/i 2 hrs of sleep. Keep dinner moderate sized ; finish at least 2 to 3 hrs before sleep. Can try warm milk, chamomile tea or melatonin along w light reading, warm bath or lavender scent.

Insomnia is abnormal: Not sleeping is not normal, and in fact very unhealthy, mentally and physically. Insomnia can have many causes. Some have primary insomnia. In others, insomnia can be the result of depression, anxiety or other psychiatric problems. Some medical problems can cause insomnia as well. If you aren't sleeping, you should see your primary care doctor.

Sleep study???: have you had a sleep study??  Potentially sleep apnea  or some other sleep issue that is related to an underlying health problem.  Physically or emotion, stress, etc.  I would see a Dr. and hopefully get advice personally.

Insomnia: Melatonin or rozerom, do not drink soda, wine or coffe late and not within 3-4 hs from sleep. Check if you have raced mind or review with your pcp, if you have depression or bipolar symptoms. Don't read or watch tv in bed room. You can get night shower to help, also  some herbs like valerine can help !

Initial insomnia: What you have is referred to as initial insomnia. It is where you have difficulty falling asleep. Simple everyday worries can cause this problem as can psychiatric conditions such as generalized anxiety disorder and depression. Practice sleep hygiene. Please see anyone of dr. Heidi fowlers excellent reviews of this topic on this healthtap website. If this becomes persistent see a sleep psychologist first and try cbt or over-the-counter melatonin taken approximately two hours before desired sleep time.If it becomes chronic see a sleep disorder specialist or a psychiatrist.Best wishes.

Use good sleep: Hygiene. 1. Keep regular bed &amp; wakening time (even weekends). Get up same time daily. 2. Use regular, relaxing bedtime routine: warm bath / shower, aromatherapy, reading, or listening to gentle music. 3. Sleep in dark, quiet, cool room w comfy mattress &amp; pillows. 4. Bedroom only for sleep &amp; sex.  Put work materials, computers, &amp; TVs in another room. 5. Finish eating at least 2-3 hrs prior to bed.

Insomnia undiagnosed: Insomnia lasting so many years becomes a very important health issue.  You should consult your doctor about finding the cause of your insomnia.  Ask about a consultation with a specialist and be seen for a sleep clinic evaluation.  You could have e.g. Sleep apnea or some other disorder causing the insomnia.  Treating the cause is your best course of action.
