i am struggling to sleep , each night i go to sleep anxious that i wont sleep. i spend a few hours lying awake and it feels like i cant get my brain to switch off and drift into sleep. i then get so worked up because i cant sleep. ?

Insomnia: Your problem with sleeping is called insomnia. There is many things that could cause it, the most important one is stress.
Try reducing your stress load at work and school, loof for information about sleep health and sleep habits.
Some people also use exercising, some people do yoga.
After all that you could try melatonin pills, this is a hormone produced by the body when we sleep.

sometimes wakeup after sleeping anxious with high blood pressure then it goes down by it self. then i sleep all the night normally. what could be the cause? (i am on dilatrend to deal with bless pressure & it is normal during the day?

: Blood pressure fluctuates a lot during 24 hour period and it usually spikes up on wakening from sleep, especially if you are anxious. That trend is more dramatic in a patient with history of hypertension on so you have nothing to concern. Take care.

starting taking 50 mg of trazodone tonight for first time for sleep. .get anxious taking new drugs. can i take 5-10mg valium if i get anxious tonight?

Having said that in some cases is used together - but safer under your doctor's supervision rather than via this forum so please ask him/her.

tried l-thianine (200 mg) instead of 5 mg valium for sleep when anxious. much better and no drowsiness next day. is l- thianine addictive like valium?

Go L-Theanine!: There is not much clinical data on how well l-theanine works for sleep or anxiety. However, it is considered quite safe (as taken in tea, for example; mage-doses have not been studied). If l-theanine is working better for you than valium, i would definitely switch given the side effects and possible dependency issues with valium.

10 year old given benadryl (diphenhydramine) to help with sleep when anxious. if it doesn't work can they take prescribed 1 mg of ativan?

Prefer melatonin: Unless prescribed by his dr. I prefer something over the counter like melatonin 2 mg at bedtime and relaxation exercise with him.

Cause of anxiety?: Are you clear on what you are anxious about? We all have anxiety but when it significantly interferes w/functioning and comfort level we need assistance.  Please see your doc for a check up and a mental health professional who deals w/anxiety.  How's your diet and exercise level?  Exercise early in the day, even brisk walking.  Get off the computer at least 1 hr before bed.

: Natural remedies for sleep are always preferable to drugs whenever possible. Meditation prior to going to sleep should help. Some foods which can help induce sleep are almonds, walnuts, turkey, kiwi, &amp; fatty fish. Chamomile tea &amp; cherry juice should also help. You should eat your regular dinner a few hours before sleep &amp; just small snacks closer to sleep time. Daily exercise should also help!

See below: Are these new symptoms?  Initially, i would suggest talking to your primary care doctor to assess why are you having anxiety, insomnia, etc. Your next steps should be taken based on whether the cause of your sx has been established. Meanwhile, you can practice relaxation (you can google the script); sleep hygiene, stress management to help you decrease tension. Good luck!

Try a relaxation: Technique. Breath in slowly ; deeply through your nostrils. Fill your lungs with air (but not to the point of discomfort). Hold for a count of five then slowly begin to exhale through an open mouth. Repeat at least 12 times, longer if you need to. Progressive muscle relaxation is also very effective.

Talk about feelings &amp; address problems. Don't avoid them. Aim for 7.5 - 8 hours of sleep/ night. Daily physical activity is optimal in a green space. Eat healthfully. Cut out junk carbs, caffeine &amp; alcohol (or  moderate). Try Qi Gong, Tai Chi, acupuncture, acupressure, homeopathy, meditation, Yoga, exercise program, deep breathing exercises or Progressive muscle relaxation. Take care.
