i am taking 60 mg phenobarbital daily after my skull tumor operation in 1995. what precautions should i take for my daily routine?

Ask yourself why: Was it a skull tumor or brain tumor? Why was the drug started in the 1st place? For seizure prevention? Have you ever had a seizure? Do you still need it? If you still need a seizure med, why phenobarbital? That's a bad drug for adults: bad for your bones, not great for your liver either. Go see a neurologist and ask him/her to reassess everything.

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without taking additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see your doctor.

Tumor : If they are soft tissue tumors o the skull then a dermatologist or plastic surgeon would be appropriate. Good Luck

i had an mri to check for a possible skull-based tumor. could this mri also be used to determine if i have a prolactinoma or a pituitary adenoma/tumor, or would i need a new mri?

Talk to radiologist: MRI of brain should show clear views of pituitary region, and could potentially show local  pathology such as an adenoma.  If report did not mention such pathology, unlikely that this is abnormal.  The type of adenoma, if visualized, would need further testing to pin down.  Discuss these issues and your concerns with your doctor and radiologist to gain a better perspective.

i had an mri for a possible skull-based tumor..thank god not serious. i'm now concerned about possible acoustic neuroma..hearing loss in one ear, tinnitus last weekend for couple of days..better now. would that mri show/have shown an acoustic neuroma?

Please do not fret: MRI resolution suffices to reveal whether or not a small tumor is present in the vast majority of all cases.  So, if read as normal, diagnosis of a neuroma is essentially excluded.

See a doctor: Perfection is more hype than reality.  Many people have asymmetrical features that can appear unusual or even " abnormal".  You need to raise your concern to your doctor first.  A careful review of your history with a physical exam are frequently all that's required to put your mind at ease.  Your doctor can make the decision with you about imaging studies if the exam is inconclusive.

hx invasive lobular ca 2006, now hard painful spot on skull, hypercalcemia, anemia & tumor markers elevated after stable for years. what could it be?

Needs quick attentio: If you have anemia(?Hb level) and high Calcium, you must have a check up and further evaluation to make sure that the cause of these abnormal tests is found quickly. Breast cancer can come back and often relapses into Bone/s. So your painful spot on the skull worries me. A Bone scan is a good test to check your bones, to start with.

Very unusual: It is very unusual for a tumor to grow out of the brain through the skull. Typically, the tumors that you can see externally arise from the scalp, the bone or possibly the dura (the lining over the brain). Cat scans or MRI scans are very helpful in delineating the size and extent of the tumor invasion.

Normal life expected: A tumor outside the skull is likely benign and should not cause brain compression.

Accepted Answer

Generally no: Benign tumors generally do not turn into malignant ones, having said that, there are enough exceptions that it is difficult to be specific without knowing what type of benign tumor on the skull you have in mind.
