i had an umbilical hernia repair few mnths back.now my navel is itching all the time and inside its raw and smelly. could it be infected?

Accepted Answer

Yes: It could be infected but it also may be normal odor from sweating. Sutures can also work their way out of the hernia repair. Return to you doctor and ask them, they should be able to put your mind at ease.

after 1 week umbilical hernia surgery, it is hard under the skin?

Accepted Answer

Yes: You will feel the "lump" that is part swelling and minor bleeding and part scar tissue formation. At the beginning of healing, scar starts off like a microscopic pile of hay.As the hay fibers get linked & stronger, the rest of the hay can be reabsorbed and the wound gets softer. The sensation of a lip or mass will then go away. Usually takes a few months to a year for all this to happen.

It depends: Swelling is common after surgery. The amount of swelling is based on the extensiveness of the operation, your body size, the location of the incision, but also can be due to a collection of fluid or blood under the skin, or an infection, or a recurrent hernia. it can last from a few days to several weeks.

can an umbilical hernia return in children?  my 5yo son's extra skin from uh surgery 5 yrs ago seems to be inflating and he complains of tummy aches.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Most umbilical hernias in children resolve by the age of 6.  If a child has persistent swelling at the belly button with straining, he/she should be evaluated by a general surgeon for repair.

i lost 220lbs naturally. the more weight i lose, the more issues im having. they found an umbilical hernia on my ct. im having an endoscopy/colonoscopy tomorrow. could it be the loose skin pressing on my bowel that is causing the bloat/discomfort?

: The skin is external. The bowel is internal. They do not interact. Bloating &amp; discomfort probably has nothing to do with external skin. I would just follow through with your GI doctor's evaluation at this time.

Unknown : It could be related to suture material or mesh, but is likely not a problem. On occasion, sutures can become infected years later. You would see redness, which would progress to a small opening that will drain pus. If that happens, see your surgeon for an exam. Hope this helps!

i have an umbilical hernia and surgery scheduled in 2 weeks. it is fat and not intestine i was told. i only had the soreness for a week. i feel absolutely fine now if at all feel some itching in the belly button area now and then. do i need surgery?

: It may only be fat now, but any abdominal wall defect in that location could eventually include small intestine. Repairing the defect while you are in stable/good health is a good option. It may never get worse, but if it does your ability to recuperate from a repair if your health changes may be less optimal. You can always cancel the procedure.

Hernia activity: Activities with a hernia should be limited by discomfort.  If you experience pain at the site of a hernia, it would be prudent to discontinue whatever activity you are doing.

How big it is ?: Most of the adult umbilical hernia with a defect  size of tip of the finger do not bother and can  be left alone. How ever larger hernias over 2cm or more, will potentially will give complications, pain, incarceration, obstruction, gangrene of bowel, peritonitis etc  need as soon as possible surgery to prevent complications.

: Usually just a bulge. If ther is pain in the area then it has to be checked to see if any content of the abdomen is caught in it
