NSAIDs: If you can tolerate non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (nsaids), symptoms can be improved with occasional use. Ibuprofen or Naproxen are commonly available over-the-counter medications that can be very helpful when symptoms flare.

have swelling just below knuckles on top of hand. cannot bend my two fingers located just past thumb for a least a hour upon awa have carpall tunnel for 30 years in left hand which is the hand i'm having problems with. is there over-the-counter medication

Antiinflammatories : Antiinflammatories suchas tylenol, (acetaminophen) Ibuprofen or Naproxen are the more common ones used.
See a hand surgeon, you may have a trigger finger that get better with injection or sugery.

have got a numb thumb since last two months. some say it is arthritis. coyld you suggest any medication?

Numb thumb: Consider tendonitis ( de Quervains), or nerve compression. What type of work do you do? Do you have DM? injury/ burns? If it is repetitive work using the thumb consider breaking  every half hour to relax the thumb. may also consider use intermittently of  thumb spica splint. Other rare considerations is MS. See an orthopedist /neurologist this week.

i have sle and take my medications but these days i have burning sensation in the thumb and first finger and part of the palm what could be this ?

Possibilities: Consider carpal tunnel syndrome, or even c-6 radiculopathy, referred from neck, and these may be just co-morbidities.  Mri and EMG testing may help.

From : From your description, it sounds like you are having some sort of vascular problem with your hands.  You should see your primary care physician promptly as some of these can progress to damage the tissues in your fingers.

Some people have raynaud's phenomenon which causes blood to be diverted from the hands to the body in response to small changes in temperature.  Most people are able to manage their symptoms and keep their bodies warm to distribute more blood to the fingers.  However, those symptoms tend to come and go rather than being constant.

Some others have collagen vascular diseases, such as lupus, scleroderma, sarcoid, or crest syndrome, that cause "vasculitis" that limits blood flow to the fingers.  These conditions can cause sores (ulcers) on the fingertips and sometimes loss of the fingertip.  There are a variety of treatments for the fingers, including medications and injections, but controlling the underlying disease is more important.

Other causes are emboli (blood clots blocking circulation) and peripheral vascular disease (similar to heart disease, but in the smaller blood vessels).

The important thing is to get evaluated and treated before any tissue damage can occur.  In a truly ischemic (no blood flow) finger, that may be hours!

Skin peeling: Could be fungal versus dermatitis ( allergic) vs eczema Some cremes( lotrisone (clotrimazole and betamethasone) in US)  contain anti-fungal and steroid  which would treat both issues.  Also check what your hands are in contact with if caustic  chemicals may be contact dermatitis and need  the steroids , lotion and  gloves as well to protect. rarely psoriasis ( should respond to steroid a bit) f/u with doc

Trigger thumb: Consider thumb spica support. See a hand surgeon or orthopedic surgeon for further treatment.

Unlikely: Nodular tenosynovitis( " trigger thumb") is unlikely to be improved w/ a squeeze ball. In fact, it may make some trigger thumbs lock more often! consider having a trained health professional give  u an injection in the " a1" pulley. This can help tremendously. If not , consider seeing  an ors  for pulley release.

is ice an effective non-drug treatment for trigger finger alongside splint? how long to ice if it is? thumb is swollen at joint.

Accepted Answer

Probably not: because trigger finger is caused by chronic, not acute, inflammation.  But trigger finger does not usually present with swelling.  Ask your doctor if it could be something else.

what cause nodules on thumbs?

Couple of things: Somewhat common is a ganglion cyst (small collection of concentrated joint fluid). Gouty tophus, or maybe a bone/cartilage cyst, or bone spur can form "nodules" on the thumb area. If it is bothersome to you, i suggest getting evaluated.
