i am scheduled for a total thyroidectomy in 9 days. about 10 days ago, i came down with a mild cold. it is better but i still have sinus pressure. no stuffy nose or any nasal symptoms. how can i clear this up so i dont have to reschedule surgery?

: Antibiotics will clear up a bacterial infection. If the infection is viral in nature, you'll have to let it take its course. Your physician can be of further assistance.

No: You can have sinus pressure without having a stuffy nose. The sinuses are nothing more than air spaces with in the bones of some of your skull. They could be filled with fluid or infected without the congestion of the nasal passage ways which would cause them to feel excessive pressure and possibly pain.

No: Colds and other upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses. They tent to circulate more often during the "cold" times of the year when people congregate closely together allowing these germs to transfer more easily. Stress of any type can weaken your immune response &amp; make you more susceptible to colds.

Yes: Yes you should . If you are having s flue or a cold or even asker give reaction . You need hydration to fight it. Most of us are well behind in our hydration in normal circumstances . When we get sick we feel it.hydrate yourself well by drinking combination of water, Gatorade , and juices 6-8 bottles a day in winter.8-10 in summer.try to build on your hydration and see how you feel

Allergies: The symptoms described are most consistent with an allergy.  Based on the info provided it is hard to say what to.  Best remedy is to avoid whatever it is that you are allergic to.  Outside of that nasal irrigation with a Neti pot or other device is helpful as are antihistamine medications like diphenhydramine, loratadine, and cetirizine.

Viruses stink: Most sinus infections in children and adults are viral pathogens.  It's not uncommon for symptoms to last 4-5+ weeks. I'd talk to your doctor about ways to decrease some of the symptoms. Can be as easy as DayQuil or if appropriate, I will prescribe a cough syrup (eg Tussionex) with an intranasal steroid (eg, Nasonex) and/or Chloraseptic Max Cough drops (they have 2 numbing agents in them).
