how do you tell if a cough is due to lung congestion or just sinus drainage?

Many causes poss: There can be many causes of cough: sinus infection, allergy, bronchitis, pneumonia, acid reflux and more. It is hard to answer your question without a thorough examination and detailed history.  If your cough is severe or persists an abnormally long time, see your md.

have asthma. clear sinus drainage. dr gave steriod shot in hip with nasonex (mometasone). nebulizer treatment  made lung function better but i still have cough?

PFTs: Pulmonary function testing will help to determine whether or not your lung function is in a proper range or not.  Cough is a nonspecific finding that may be associated with an asthma exacerbation, but there are many other causes.

i woke up today not feeling good. here is the symptoms. coughing, weight in lungs, shortness of breath, chunky dry bloody phlegm, sinus drainage, muscle ache, lethargy, lightheaded, mirgraine, and fever. any suggestions?

SEE DOCTOR ASAP: It seems you are pretty sick and may have a lower respiratory infection like Acute Bronchitis or Pnumonia and need to see your Doctor asap.If can not see Doctor go to the ER
Meanwhile Drink plenty of fluids and take Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen if youbdo not have allergy to it or have a stomach ulcer.
You need examination and also may need Chest Xray and treatment with Antibiotics if Bacterial infection.

operated fungus ball in left maxillary sinus. now, postnasal discharge(~ right side) in stomach and left lung.big spleen. smelly urine. what could be?

See doctor: Fungal ball in the sinus is not expected to cause urinary , abdominal, or urinary symptoms . If this affects your lung, then one needs to rule out the presence of fungal ball in the lung also.  With the large spleen, I suspect that you are having a systemic disease and this requires tests and examination to clarify.   By the way, the odor of urine is not usually diagnostic of anything .

i have a cough and sinus drainage and chest pain and i am achey and i have a low fever the highest was 99.6. is it serious enough to see a doctor?

Maybe: It depends on how long this has been going on.  If you have been experiencing this for a week or longer then you should at least see your family physician.

Usually: For sinusitis, nasal saline rinses are an important measure and can help to relieve the pressure. The medications should be used carefully and as needed. Fluids, rest and fever control are suggested.

i have sinus drainage, a deep tickle in my chest with coughing sometimes, and a weird flutter like sensation in upper chest or throat that causes me to cough. is this bronchitis or something else?

Need more info: If you have had these symptoms for more than a few weeks, you may have allergy to something in the air in your environment. You may try over the counter anti-histaminic. Make sure that you are not drowsy and do not drive or engage in other activity till you have tried the medication for a couple of days. If that does not help, see an ENT doctor.
Wish you good health! - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

red rash on chest starting to get a bad sore throat and ear pain. have had some allergy sinus drainage. no fever yet. could this be strep?

STREP TONSILLITIS : Enlarged tonsils causing earache  due to pressure , headache , chills, body aches  and scarlet fever(rash).

Lungs and sinuses...: ...Are both parts of the same airway, lines with the same types of cells, exposed to the same irritants and infections, so yes, the two are most probably related.

does sinus infection cause lungs to hurt ?

Accepted Answer

Not usually: A sinus infection is usually in your head/face/cheeks. It should not, typically, cause your lungs to hurt. Unless, of course, the infection tracked down into your lungs and caused pneumonia. Would get checked out.
