Only if: They become infected and the infection travels to other parts of the body and becomes life threatening. The chances of that occurring, even though theoretically possible, is minute. That is not to say that if you have impacted wisdom teeth that require removal, you should not follow your dentist's recommendations. There are other risks of not removing them.

Impacted means there is something that is preventing the tooth from erupting into the mouth.  The position of the developing tooth, size of the tooth, size of the jaws, and any tissue, bone or pathological problems (cysts) may prevent normal eruption.

Depends: The surgical procedures required for removal of wisdom teeth will depend upon the position and development of the tooth, which jaw the tooth is in, and the techique and equipment used by your dentist or surgeon.  Erupted wisdom teeth may not require any cutting unless the tooth breaks.  Impacted  teeth may require cutting of the gums, and/or creating a window in the bone and sectioning the tooth.

Possibly.: An impacted tooth should be removed, and soon since it can cause pain and worse issues, like infection.  It is also likely to crowd and affect/damage other teeth, as it is not coming in properly.

PAIN: People with true pain will often go to great lengths to remove the source. Having teeth close together without pain would not be considered clinically important and thus not drive one to have the teeth pulled. Timed removal of select, paired lower and upper teeth during the pre-teen or teen years may prevent the wisdom teeth from becoming impacted & decrease the need later.

Possible ...: Complications from impacted teeth that are not removed are several.  Once there is an opening through the gum to allow saliva (thus bacteria) to reach the surface of the impacted tooth, two things can happen - decay of the tooth or infection of the gum covering it.  A cyst or tumor can occasionally develop from an unerupted impacted tooth; it requires a periodic panoramic xray to detect.

Sometimes: Usually a oral surgeon will remove impacted wisdom teeth. It depends on the situation. They are removed if they have a cyst around them. Also if they broken through the bone and stopped growing in. The surgeon should be able to answer the reasons. Also your dentist should be able to give you an opinion

Dental exam needed: Sometimes an impacted wisdom tooth can be left in place if there is a high risk of complications with extraction.  See an oral surgeon for an exam to determine  if your wisdom need to be extracted or not.
