Depends: Sorry for the vague answer but it depends on the injury. Children may develop signs and symptoms quickly, but you generally have to watch them for at least 24 hours after any significant trauma to make sure that they don't develop any problems.

Sounds positive: Based upon your description, and now passage of almost 3 days, doubt you have any reasons to be concerned.  If he were to get difficult to arouse, confused, have nausea and vomiting, these would be reasons to reassess.

: Good that the ER doc said you had no serious head injury.Not sure if they said no concussion? Concussion symptoms can last for weeks, so try not to worry.However,if the symptoms continue or you have vomiting or any other new symptoms,you should be rechecked.Also recommend not doing strenuous exercise(physical rest)or being on your computer or phone too much(brain rest)until your symptoms are gone.

He could certainly take Ibuprofen for the time being &amp; put a cool compress on his forehead for comfort. The pattern does not suggest anything terrible at this point.

Subdural hematoma: and seizures may take longer to present. Brain contusions and epidural hematomas present more rapidly.

Hit in head, unconscious, concussion with full recovery.
Same plus headache with short duration.
Then there are all the worse things 
persistent headaches, 
seizures, 
mental changes etc.
