The optimal adult : dose of  Concerta for many adults is 72 mg./day, given as 2 36 mg. pills each AM. Your doctor would prescribe the 54 mg. pill first to see if that's sufficient. The Watson/Activis version of Concerta is the only true generic equivalent of brand Concerta, manufactured in the same factory, using the same equipment and the same drug delivery system as original Concerta. Check with your pharmacist.

Do not cut in half: Concerta is a specialized extended release preparation.  If you try to cut it in half it will lose that property and you will not get predictably a half dose.

Dosing issue: If he is amped up, he may be under dosed. Proper dosing usually hits a happy medium between the busy behavior off meds and a too quiet pattern if overdosed. Making a switch to a new med often requires some time and several tries.
