i stopped taking iodine supplements after 5 days today due to adverse side effects such as anxiety. how long until this goes away and i feel like myself again?

I am not aware of: iodine supplements causing  immediate psychiatric side effects altho it can cause other side effects like a bitter taste in the mouth.  Perhaps this was a coincidence.  Since we don't know why you're feeling anxious, it's not possible to tell you when you'll feel like yourself again.

WHY?: Why do you want to supplement iodine? Excess iodine can lead to thyroid problems in some people, and many people get skin rashes from iodine. There's lots of iodine in your diet, particularly salt and bread.

isn't the amount of iodine in iodoral excessive?why is this a recommended iodine supplement? the rda for iodine is only 150 mcg but iodoral has 12 mg!

Controversial but...: Dr. Guy abraham, a professor at ucla, formulated iodoral & believes 12.5 mg is the average daily intake in japan, has a variety of health benefits & is safe & effective. what is the best form of iodine supplement? i'm a vegan, trying to cut back on salt, and i don't want to eat seaweed everyday. what is nascent iodine? is that an okay form of iodine? how much should i take?

: Since the primary sources of iodine are salt, seaweed, dairy and cod, you will need to take a multivitamin/mineral supplement.There are many whole food based vegan multivitamin supplements that can fill this need.

dear sir. i have hypothyroidism and i take 100mcg of levothyroxine everyday. 
please tell me can i take iodine supplement, if i can how?

Why?: If your Family Doc diagnosed you w/hypothyroidism and prescribed Levothyroxine, then you shouldn't need anything else, assuming that 100mcg is right dose for you. Only way to find out is to check your TSH every 6wks or so until you get several values in same range. If you still suffer from hypothyroidism despite 100mcg, tell your doc and get higher dose, not iodine supplement.

Iodine not needed: The primary organ that uses iodine is the thyroid. If your thyroid is removed, then an iodine supplement will not be of use.  In addition, there is a lot of iodine in a normal diet.  It is very hard to become iodine deficient in all but a handful of remote regions of the world.

Hypothyroid: Most likely you would have become hypothyroid anyway.  Heavy doses of iodine can sometimes affect your thyroid function, but a simple dietary supplement usually will not.

Lab functions to...: 17 y/o male says I have goiter caused by iodine deficient hypothyroidism. I am taking iodine supplements.  When I will see first treatment results, goiter isn't very big?  If a Healthcare provider started one on the iodine supplement it will be appropriate to have him/her monitor the Thyroid Lab Functions to guide treatment. If  not one should see a PCP/Endocrinologist for Follow up.

Not due to: supplements. It is not likely that the supplements caused the missed period. The supplements are also not necessary. Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.
