i've taken 2 sleep aid tablets that contains 25mg of doxylamine succinate and 2 pain killers containing 5mg. have i overdosed? 24yo male.

Max daily dose is: 60 mg/d in divided doses 4-6 hrs apart. It may interact with other medications so best to check with pharmacist about interactions with the specific pain killer even though it is in combo with the pain killer since you have taken an additional 50 mg above what was included in the pain killer.  Overdose is 50-500 mg/kg and may include dilated pupils, seizures, hallucinations so you should be okay.

Both commonly used: Both of these are commonly used over-the-counter. They are sedating and help people fall and stay asleep to a greater or lesser degree depending on the person. Often tolerance develops if the person takes one or the other regularly. Melatonin is another otc medication that can help with sleep. Be sure to practice sleep hygiene -- structuring your sleep, avoid lying long periods not sleeping, etc.

No: there are virtually no false positives in hair testing, since it is done with GC/MS or other comparable sophisticated confirmatory tests.  Doxylamine can cause false positives tests for Methadone and PCP on screening tests, but NOT on the confirmatory tests.

Like Benadryl (diphenhydramine).: Doxylamine is an antihistamine like benadryl (diphenhydramine).  Is has similar sedating properties.  Not too strong.  Minimal anti anxiety effect.

: I am curious to understand why you would bother. Neither has an addiction potential. If you want to, I see no problem with the practice but see no benefit to trying to keep track of two sleep meds rather than just sticking with one.

Likely ok: but the quality of sleep from Benadryl (diphenhydramine) has not been studied yet. Thus although it is safe, you may or may not be getting the sleep quality required for optimal health.  If possible try to establish better sleep habit (avoid caffeine after noon, no bright light /TV in evening, no exercise in late evening, regular exercise etc).

is it safe to take 2 unisom for sleep instead of just the recommended 1? (they're 25mg doxylamine succinate) 1 doesn't work for me. tried benadryl (diphenhydramine) too

Check with doctor: Although it is probably OK to double up on the dose, each person is different and perhaps the drug is not the best one for you and may not work even with doubling the dose. The current trend is to cut the dose down instead of raising it as in the case of Ambien (zolpidem). A sleep study may be helpful if this is a chronic issue.

Use Breathing Relaxation, Visual Imagery, Tai Chi, Yoga, and Meditation, Music

Minimal: Yes for some.. At 10 mg the side effects should be minimal. Side effects to Doxepin can include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, impaired concentration. Avoid in the elderly.

i was consid. sub. melatonin for seroquel (quetiapine) as i have iss. w/ the side effects. weigh about 90 lbs what dose of melat. wld be advisable? for sleep aid?

First and foremost: do not discontinue Seroquel (quetiapine) without discussing this with your prescribing physician, That said, 3 mg of Melatonin is a reasonable starting dose if you weight 90 lbs.
