There can be several: Reasons for this: a missed or retained disc fragment, wrong level surgery, post op nerve inflammation, post op scarring involving nerve, recurrent disc herniation, post op infection, there may have been conjoined nerve root present or the reason for your pain was not due to disc herniation.  If you are smoker, success rate of spine surgery is significantly lower as well. Even more possibilities.

Depends: Initially you should try conservative treatment such as physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications. If you see no improvement then the next step would be epidural steroid injections from a pain management specialist. Or you may even require surgery if nothing else is helping. True sciatica?: True sciatic nerve pain typically results from compression or irritation from the piriformis muscle in the buttocks. Treatment can include physical therapy, massage, piriformis injections, heat, acupuncture, and in rare instances, surgery to decompress the sciatic nerve. Often times when patients complain of sciatica, the cause is actually a pinched nerve in the spine known as radiculopathy.

Multiple ways: The sciatic nerve can be irritated because of a herniated disc, arthritis that results in tightening of the spinal canal, falls, injuries, or other rare reasons (tumors, infections). Anti-inflammatory medications, alternating heat/cold therapy, physical therapy (especially with traction) can be helpful to relieve sciatic pain.

Varies: In most cases acute pain normally will resolve within a few weeks but sometimes take several months.  If your symptoms persist more than a few weeks then you should see you primary doctor. Accepted Answer

Several : Low back, buttock and "shooting" leg pain are all symptoms of a pinched nerve.  It sounds like you may have that problem.  If the pain is severe and limiting your activity still, the best non-narcotic medications that I have found to work for my patients are antiinflammatories such as Ibuprofen or Naproxen which are over-the-counter medications.  Other non-narcotic medications include tramadol (ultram) which requires a prescription and nerve-pain medications such as gabapentin.  These are all to be taken for temporary pain relief.  This type of pain typically resolves with time.  Ask your primary physician about these if the pain is still limiting you.  If it is still going on for more than a month an MRI may be helpful to help sort out what is going on and there could be other potential treatments outside of surgery that could benefit you.
