Relative....: People who have allergies to shellfish or fish have a relative contraindication to taking fish oil supplements and they should proceed with caution when considering taking them.

i had iodine constant 6 years ago and it nearly killed me. i want to take prenatal vitamins. am i allergic to fish oil because of the iodine allergy?

Folate: Take folate, iron and calcium separately instead of a prenatal vitamin. Folate is most important since it protects from certain birth defects. in fact some obstetricians recommend folate alone instead of prenatal vitamins if you are healthy and have a good diet.

Allergy testing: It is unusual to be able to eat crabs and seafood with such a strong history of iodine and multiple seafood allergies.  I would not recommend fish oil at this time.  If you are depressed, there are medications and counseling that can help - see your Doctor.  If you have not been evaluated for specific food allergies, seeing an Allergist for testing is advised.

Fish oil: I wouldn't take the chance of taking fish oil if i were allergic to shellfish.

Fish oil vs shellfis: Generally fish oil is produced from oily type fish ie bluefish or salmon so it should be safe to take for people with true shellfish allergies.  Krill because it is a type of shrimp - may be more of a challenge - if possible i would stick to fish oil.

Better not: There are vegetarian versions of omega-3 (dha&epa) supplements that are non-fish in origin google for online sources.

Accepted Answer

Not needed: Multivitamins have not been shown to improve health or longevity when studied scientifically.  It would be better for you to follow a healthy and nutritious diet with a lot of veggies and fruits.

See an allergist: Not all seafoods are created equally, thus you may not be allergic to all seafoods, just some seafoods.  A good allergist will be able to guide you, after sufficient testing, to let you know what is and is not available for you to eat. In the meantime, do not experiment by eating seafood on your own.

whenever i take omega 3 fish oil vitamins, my scalp gets sores like big bumps that hurt. why? am i allergic?

See a dermatologist: The scalp bumps are not caused by fish oil. However it is a complete waste of money, so you should throw it away.

i had a mild allergic reaction to fexofenadine a couple of weeks ago. it interacted with risperidone. face tingling. im having that same issue with omega 3 fish oil. i take sertraline and a low dose aspirin. is one of those medications interacting?

: It is possible but we need to now every thing you are taking including vitamins and other OTC stuff.

Go to Drugs.com and enter all of the stuff you are taking into their interaction checker. That is what I do when I am seeing a patient. Easy to do.
