Not a good idea: The benzodiazepines such as Xanax or Ativan  are addicting. I suggest you speak with your prescriber about alternatives such as behavioral therapy, alternative anxiety meds and serotonergic meds.

: Should is not equal must or have to. There are conditions which required to be treated with clonazepam in the long term.

Not benzo's.: Hello - long term use of benzodiazapines can lead to tolerance. Marijuana can cause marked  psychiatric problems in some people including anxiety, psychosis & paranoia. Paxil can be used long -term but most of my patients have experienced more side effects with it then from Lexapro & zoloft.  I see you are on Lexapro -it has an excellent side effect profile. Buspar (buspirone) is very safe for long-term use.

Stress reduction: Often one of the causes of TMJ is stress.   The benzodiazepine reduces your anxiety and stress and also helps you sleep better at night so that your joints can heal.

Unlikely: Benzo's are more likely to be associated with hallucinations, especially in overdoses or during drug withdrawal. Many report nightmares or vivid dreams while taking benzo's. Only one mention of benzo's used to treat auditory hallucinations in schizophrenic pt concluded effect resulted from muscle relaxing  & anxiolytic effects.

Anxiety, generally: Benzodiazepines are a class of medications known as anxiolytics meaning anti-anxiety.  Many who take benzos do so chronically for anxiety disorders that are long-standing.  Others take benzos as needed to sleep or when anxiety suddenly becomes overwhelming.  As for how to have this class of medication prescribed, I recommend an open conversation with your doctor.
