Irritation: Could be an irritation of the superficial nerve that comes out on the back of your scalp.  Muscle spasm can sometimes cause this nerve to become pinched or irritated.  Try NSAIDs and if it doesn't get better, see your doctor.

sharp pain in back left side of head when coughing it comes and goes as soon as i stop coughing. its like not completely in the back but kinda on the side. i was wondering if my neck could be why? any idea its been a few days of it?

Very common: Poor posture leads to a muscle strain and back/neck pain. Most patients do not have a serious spinal problem. However if your pain accompanied by neurological deficiency (numbness, weakness) call a doctor. Moist heat, stretch exercises NSAID (otc) aleve (naproxen) and good mattress are very helpful. If concerned see pcp for further investigation.

history of dvt and pe been off coumadin (warfarin) for 6 weeks developed a severe headache this evening  mainly on right side of head and neck?

Hard to say: I would start with a ear, nose and throat specialist. This could be anything from a a tumor near the ear canal (ocoustic neuroma) to chronic otitus (an inflammation inside the middle ear). You might need an MRI or ct to start the diagnostic process. Sometime dental issues get referred to the ear, also.
