have a sharp pain starting base of head on left side travels to top of left side of head. tilting head back i can feel the surge go back down to neck.

Irritation: Could be an irritation of the superficial nerve that comes out on the back of your scalp. Muscle spasm can sometimes cause this nerve to become pinched or irritated. Try NSAIDs and if it doesn't get better, see your doctor.
