Not usually: Usually that can be followed. It also depends on your medical and gyn history and why you had the previous surgery in the first place. But a cyst like that can usually be followed and as long as it is not causing you bad symptoms it probably does not need to be removed.

Yes, : Yes, if you have had an ovarian cyst in the past, then you may be at risk for having another. Ovarian cysts may not produce symptoms, and you may not even know if you have one unless it is detected during a pelvic exam. Since you are having an irregular menstrual cycle, it is prudent to see your doctor, especially if you suspect an ovarian cyst. Other signs can include bloating, abdominal or pelvic cramping, painful period, nausea/vomiting and difficulty urinating.

i have a 'solid' 3.1 x 2.2 cm cyst on my left ovary. my doctor recommended a laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy. is this the correct recommendation?

YES: This is an appropriate recommendation. Once he looks at the cyst he may be able to save the ovary and take only the cyst, but it is best to plan for removal of the ovary.  He could also find things that require more than removal of the ovary & tube.  That is not so common and hopefully you won't have that experience.  Good luck.

Endometriosis return: If you had Endometriosis on the previous ovary which was removed and your colon, it is likely that it has returned and needs MD evaluation.

Post-op pain: Some post operative pain is to be expected but you should be getting better every day. If this is not the case, you need to let your surgeon know. Hope you feel better soon.

Unsure why: If this is a new development and only lasts a few days, it may be related to a normal ovarian cyst.  Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen) is ok to take in the short term.  If the pain is severe or if this has been going on for more than  a few weeks, then you should be seen by your gynecologist for an exam.

Left ovarian pain ?: Pain in the left lower abdomen can be ovarian, or some colon disorders.  Consistent ovarian pain may occur with enlarging ovarian cysts.  See your gyn provider for an ultrasound of the pelvic area, and if negative, ask for a gastroenterologist referral.
