sensitive teeth on top left. did xray on that side and cold test on those teeth affected. there is no infection but an old filling is on a nerve. i don't have insurance until march. is there really harm in waiting to do the root canal in my case?

: The downside is that the tooth may become infected and need treatment before March. If so, you'll need treatment sooner than later.

Different Problems: Sensitivity, headache, and possibly the earache can be caused by deep restorations that have inflamed the nerves in your teeth. Your other problems are most likely unrelated. Have your dentist check your sensitive teeth and see your physician for your other problems.

how long does hot and cold sensitivity last after a filling? i had my first filling last week, and it's really been annoying how sensitive it is. will this last as long as the filling is there or will i get used to it?

It : It really depends on how deep the filling was. The deeper it is (in relationship to the nerve) the more sensitive it can be. This is especially true with a cold thermal stimulus.

Give it a chance, and most likely it will calm down. There is a very small chance that your bite on the filling may be "high", which will irritate the tooth and give you the same symptoms.

If it does not get better in the next week or so give your dentist a call.

Yes, but...: Usually for a short time only. Like a cut in the skin, it is normal to be tender for a couple of days until it heals. Deep fillings and cracked teeth can be highly sensitive (esp. To ice/cold) and may need further care. Sensitivity that lasts should be evaluated by your dentist. Root canal therapy can alleviate painful pulpal problems.

Soft diet: Some people are more prone to post-op sensitivity than others.  One simple thing you can try would be to eat a softer diet for a couple days. Using ice will also reduce swelling of the nerve inside the tooth, and help reduce sensitivity. Finally, you may want to mention this to your dentist.  Many patients will benefit from a short course of steroids to reduce the swelling of the nerve and pain..

Go back and ask.: Sometimes teeth can be sensitive and remain sensitive for some time. Your time is not unusual but i don't think you dentist will feel like you are being a bother if you go back and ask about the sensitivity.  The questions are....Were the fillings big or deep?
Did something break?  Anything else you may want to know.

Maybe?: If the tooth is sensitive to sweet you have a cavity.  If it is sensitive to cold your bit my be off or you are grinding your teeth.  If it is hot than the nerve is infected and you may need a root canal.

Last checkup?: See a dentist who can give you a one on one examination, take some x-rays and determine the cause of your tooth sensitivity. We can't do that over the internet as much as we would like to. There are other causes of tooth sensitivity other than cavities or existing fillings.

Need more info: How long ago were fillings and partial root canal done?  Why wasn't root canal completed.  Which teeth were treated.  Which teeth are sensitive?  How long ago was the infection treated (root canal)?  How extensive was the other surgery (fillings)

i got 3 fillings 2 weeks ago and my teeth have been sensitive to cold since then.  i feel pain for a few minutes after drinking a cold drink. normal??

Fillings: Depending on the depth of filling, restorative material, bite , recession of gums etc  teeth can be sensitive post treatment. Lingering sensitivity is not an encouraging sign, however if the time of linger is diminishing thats's more encouraging, if getting worse or concerned, contact your dentist
