Suffocation: You are right. A lot of other things can cause a drowning effect. This comes about any time the breathing passages are blocked or something foreign enters it. Solids and liquids can both do it.

hi my two year old was having a bath tonight and she was gargling water, then chocked and coughed and threw up. could she get secondary drowning?

Mgt: I would suggest closely observing her for any signs of distress or infection. Please check her temperature and call your PCP for a follow up visit. If she is in distress, experiencing shortness of breath, or febrile, please see acute care.

Yes: I recall a sailor we kept in the small ICU we had at a Navy outpost. We kept him on his belly because he quit breathing on his back.You get enough alcohol in you and the nerves telling you to breathe quit working. You might also vomit and inhale the stuff into your lungs, which can be fatal. Alcohol kills in many different ways, but this is a quick one.

Supportive care : It happens after drowning. No body knows who gets it. It is complication of the drowning process no body could explain well but i think it is. Acute lung injury kind of situation which rarely happens. So if. Drowning happens and  patient comes out of that he needs to be  closely watched for three days if things get worse then in the hospital it will be treated. With supportve care.

Unlikely: But if it were to happen, symptoms will develop 1 hour - 24 hours after your "drowning" incident.  You will develop cough, difficulty breathing that gets progressively worse.  If that happens, go to hospital. I'm glad you are better. I doubt that you have any more trouble.

For the most part: The initial cough reflex should remove any water in the system. I would not be worried. But, definitely take the time to check on the patient during the night just to make sure that they are breathing well.

Water in the lungs: If person had a near drowning accident after which he/she appears ok that person still can die 1-48 hrs later if enough water entered the lungs to significantly impear oxygen exchange, they can die from hypoxemia and that will be secondary drowning.

Mgt: A small amount of water aspirated should not cause a problem, if you are otherwise healthy. If the cough is resolved and you are breathing normally, it should be fine. If you have breathing difficulties, fever or prolonged cough I would suggest an appointment with your pediatrician.
