A member asked:

My 3 month old just choked on her vomit, and i'm wondering if secondary drowning can be caused by other things besides water?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Suffocation: You are right. A lot of other things can cause a drowning effect. This comes about any time the breathing passages are blocked or something foreign enters it. Solids and liquids can both do it.
