Yes, muscle spasms: It is difficult to make a suggestion without more history but TMJ can cause muscle spasms, but not usually in the SCM and scalenes.  The SCM muscle may be spastic by the way you sleep or use it and also may be caused by a virus. Try ibuprofen and if not relieved in 2-3 days see a doctor as there may be something under the muscle causing it.

Injury, inflammation, strain, excessive forces, twists, etc. Can cause internal swelling, inflammation, strains on ligaments, internal damage to disc, etc will elicit pain. when i explain tmj/tmd to my patients, i tell them that everyone has TMJ (unless some type of mutation, cancer or accident.)  TMJ is the anatomy of the jaw joints- (t) temporal bone on upper maxilla; (m) mandible- lower jaw; (j) joints- where the two meet in a complex of tendons, ligaments, etc.  Tmd are the symptoms exhibited by someone who has a problem with the TMJ complex.

May make TMJ worse: Tmj problems refers to problems with the jaw joint in front of the ear (temporomandibular joint).  Typically the problems arise from some form of mechanical breakdown in the joint due to various jaw/teeth issues.  If one constantly chews gum and the underlying condition is not treated, this will lead to more problems down the road and worsening of the current symptoms.  Your jaw won't get better.
