is there such thing as  sciatica surgery?

Yes: Sciatica is typically caused by a lumbar disk herniation.  When the disk herniates, it compresses the nerve causing symptoms. Surgery removes the compression by removing the herniated disk.  As long as the spine is stable, the back doesn't need fusion.  Additional compression can be addressed with a laminectomy.

Sciatica: Biggest risk is failure to resolve your symptoms long term ( happens 10-15 % of time } . Other risks are associated with any surgery like infection, blood loss, nerve injury ,blood clots or anesthetic complications involving irritation of your trachea or lungs.

See below: Current stressors like your surgery, impaired sleep due to pain, possible reduced workload or other changes in your life can bring on anxiety. You may also have had a preexisting anxiety condition that has broken through with tolerance to the opioid med. You may try other tx like cognitive behavioral therapy, exercise, stretch or manual tx: chiropractic care. Check w/ your Dr. about the symptoms.

Depends: First, conservative therapy is associated with longer duration pain, and physical disability at one year according to a Swiss/Canadian study recently published.  The usual conservative treatment is Physical Therapy, which will typically be 'active' although certainly will have stretching associated with it.

It is possible if : The nerve block irritated the nerve or the needle somehow irritated the nerve.  See your surgeon for an evaluation &amp; recommendations.  One should also rule out other possible causes such as positioning during the surgery which could have also been a source of the symptoms.  Sometimes sciatica develops if there are changes in the way you move as a result of the reason you needed surgery or after.

Atypical: This  is not a typical course after microdiscectomy. I would suggest that you seek the input and follow up with your surgeon.

Pain: Sometimes people continue to have sciatica pain because the screws have loosened or an infection has developed.  Sometimes it just takes a long time for the nerve pain to diminish (particularly if the pain was present long before surgery.  Either way be sure to follow up with your surgeon to evaluate your back to ensure everything is healing appropriately.

LAST OPTION!: Surgery is the LAST OPTION, unless there is a clear, well-documented, and progressive loss of muscle strength in the leg / foot ("foot drop")  The most common outcome of disc surgery is incomplete pain relief.  Other risks are infection, never root damage, chronic severe headaches, progressively more severe back pain, air embolism (which may be deadly), and complications of anesthesia.

following left hip replacement surgery, is it common for piriformis and sciatica to hurt so bad one can't get out of bed, for 7-8 mths.?

Accepted Answer

Uncommon: If your sciatic pain has been going on for 8 months, you may be dealing with a herniated lumbar disc and an MRI of your lumbosacral spine would be worthwhile for evaluation and treatment decision. You could consult a neurologist or neurosurgeon first.
