shooting pain in both shins.i understand it is unlikely to be my sciatica.cant see doc for a week.what can cause shooting pain in both shins/front low legs? no injurys or falls but i did have a lump & bruise on r shin 2 weeks ago from unknown source?

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests.  You may take acetaminophen, no more than 4 g in one day, no alcohol. It may tide you over till you see a doctor.

i have a hand sized raise/lump on my outer thigh,my leg hurts from bad sciatica w/muscle spasms.could it be muscle/nerves or a blood clot?

Leg bump: It could be any one of several things.  Possible lipoma, blood clot or other soft tissue mass.  See your doctor.

Biopsy needed: Best to check it out. It is a swelling that may have to be biopsied to determine what it is.

YES.: Sciatica is a symptom looking for a diagnosis.  You need one!  The lump on your thigh may or may not be related to your other symptoms.  In any case, you need to see a doctor.  Please do so at your earliest convenience.

Accepted Answer

Yes and most of the : Time without surgery!   90% with sciatica due to a disc herniation get better without surgery independent of any specific treatment as time is the biggest healer.  Treatment also can include: medication, injections, activity modification, physical therapy, acupuncture and chiropractic. For those that have indicated surgery, the success is 90-95% as long as one is not a smoker or morbidly obese.

It depends: Sciatica without numbness, weakness, or bowel or bladder symptoms is often treated with anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen. It is best to avoid activities which can irritate the back like bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting. Walking is usually ok if it doesn't make the pain worse. If the pain is severe, or persists for several weeks, or has other symptoms, it should be evaluated.

Accepted Answer

No: No, many structures from the low back can produce pain in the leg. This includes the discs, the facet joints as well the covering of the nerve sac called the dura. In fact i see more pain from some of these other structures than true sciatica. The quality of the pain from sciatica is also different.

Several options: If no recent imaging, repeat MRI is warranted to exclude recurrent herniation vs scar tissue. If surgery is not warranted, can try Lyrica (pregabalin) or Gabapentin for neuropathic pain relief. Cymbalta can also be effective for chronic neuropathic pain.

my brother 28 went dr on friday w/ back & leg pain was told he has sciatica.today pain so bad he did not get out of bed, should he see a dr?

Sciatica: is an extremely painful condition and he should call his prescribing doctor to rule out the possibility of a herniated disc. He will need anti-inflammatory and pain medication.

there is a pain in my left leg(calf area) specially when i ride a motorbike,and i even have sciatica problem..what steps should i take to cure it?

Sciatica is always: secondary to another medical problem. Encourage medical evaluation to determine the cause of your sciatica.  This will allow provider to see if the cause can be remedied. In the meantime - acupuncture can be helpful with pain due to sciatica Take care.
