Yes: Changes involving the facet joints related to degeneration can create sciatic symptoms related to inflammation or due to nerve compression secondary to stenosis or narrowing of the nerve root exit due to overall degenerative changes at that spine level or due to facet joint overgrowth or instability or even due to a synovial cyst forming from a facet joint or all the above.

Need an Evaluation: Stronger medicine than what is available over the counter, Motrin and tylenol, (acetaminophen) which you can use as long as you are not allergic or have kidney or liver problems respectively. If possible, walk: I tell my patients that if you are able to stay active then to try to do so. Sometimes, however, the pain is too severe, and rest can help.

Be careful: You should stay active but try not to do anything that expressly worsens your sciatica.  Sciatica is mostly the result of a disc herniation or an annular tear in the discs of the spine and by keeping a high level of activity you run the risk of injuring the disc more.

Move with sciatica: Sciatica, pain radiating from your low back/buttock to your leg is usually transient. Although recommended in the past, prolonged bed rest is now discouraged. Although sciatic pain refers to pain from a compressed sciatic nerve which would result in pain down into your foot, it frequently doesn't go down that far; the pain is often caused by muscle strain.

If related to a disc: For 75% of people with sciatic pain due to a herniated disc, up to 3 months.  90% are better usually about a year later from the onset of sciatic pain due to a disc herniation treated without surgery. If related to spinal stenosis, it may persist or worsen if not treated.

i was diagnosed with sciatica about a year ago. some days i have bad flare ups making it hard to walk. would walking with a cane help?

Get evaluated: Need to understand cause of sciatica, and if due to herniated disc, with occasional flares due to root compression, might consider epidural steroid injection, or even surgery.  Do not see value to use of a cane, and you might be safer with a walker.  Best to see physiatrist and get some rehab guidance.

Bowel or Bladder : If you have any changes of your bowel or bladder function, you must go to the emergency room. If you have progressive extremity weakness you should go to the er. 

Consider looking into affordable health insurance, as it comes in very handy often. Also consider going in and paying out of pocket for care to see a doctor when you need treatment as well, lots of doctors will give you discounts.

Possible: It is possible you have a radicular pain. That happens when there is inflammation in the spinal canal that causes pressure in the nerve that exits the canal at that level and causes pain. Commonly people call it 'pinched nerve'. Sciatica is a type of radicular pain. Hip pathology should also be considered.
