Not likely: While the symptoms of scar tissue, such as pain or restriction in motion, may be treated with multiple nonoperative modalities, it is unlikely anything short of surgery will remove or lessen scar tissue that has been there following a procedure done three years ago. Scar tissue: Scar tissue develops as a result of injury to affected area, infection or surgery. Performing surgery for the sake of scar removal is often time not very helpful. It's possible that the knee has been re-injured which is causing the pain. Surgical technique is the best way to reduce scar tissue but is still a literal and figurative "double edged" sword.

Massage: Scars thicken for 6 weeks and then remodel on their own.  You can speed up the remodeling process by simple massage.  Areas with more motion develop more scar tissue due to the tensile forces applied to it.  Pressure garments or silicone sheeting help reduce these larger "hypertrophic" raised scars. Topical steroid creams work for itchy raised scars.  Keloids need steroid injection or radiation.

Need more info: Loss of motion after acl recon is a known problem that at times can be quite challenging to treat. Each case is unique and has to be carefully evaluated individually for each patient. In general treatment options include physical therapy, dynamic bracing, and further surgery to revise the acl recon. Discuss this at length with your surgeon and if you are not happy with the answers get 2nd opinion.

More info: I assume the acl graft was intact at second and third surgery? If scar involves area under or in behind patella this best explains catching. If it is in front of the graft, called a "cyclops lesion" that is a different story. Now you most likely need exercises for mobility of the knee and especially patella. Was it a patellar tendon graft or hamstring or something else?

Probably scar tissue: You may have patella tendinitis or build up of scar tissue. Try backing off on working out, ice, NSAIDs. If not better you should have it checked out by your Ortho.

6 mo out acl reconstruction and surgeon said i shouldn't play because my scar is still purple. is this true? why does the color matter?

Color doesn't matter: 6 months after ACL reconstruction is considered minimum to be fully ready for sports. Most of us want you to have full motion, strength that matches the other side, normal gait and good balance. Some get this in 6 months, others take up to a year.  Your doctor is evaluating all these variables, not you scar color.

after an acl surgery, how long should it take for my incisions to close and scar up?

Accepted Answer

Probably soon.: It depends on your health. Diabetes, among other things, impairs wound healing, as does some antiseptics we used to use like H2O2. Within 24 hours, a sutured incision will have one layer of epidermal cells already. It will probably take up to 2-3 weeks at the most. When are the stitches due to come out, or was another method of closure used.

can your own tissue grow into a lars ligament acl reconstruction?? how does a lars ligament work?

Great question. Mayb: Maybe . In theory the LARS ligament acts like a structural scaffold for remanants of your ACL tear that are vascularized. Early studies are promising but much more is needed to understand success rates. Maybe the graft and Lars could be seeded with stem cells and PRP to promote intergrowth and improve stability.
